About the Artist
Artist Statement
I find artistic inspiration and structure in the patterns of the natural world. My focus is to paint expressive landscapes in an impressionistic style. Experimenting with combinations of traditional and non-traditional materials exposes my love of the process. Pure, lush color, meshed with organic shapes and forms allows me to create a deeper ambiance on a flat surface.
"Color is my day-long obsession, joy, and torment."
Claude Monet
Biography
Robin Samiljan grew up in Wilmette, 18 miles north of Chicago. After graduating from Vanderbilt University she moved to Swampscott, Massachusetts. The New England landscape stimulated her imagination and prompted her to re-create nature's gifts through visual art. Influenced by reading "The Tao of Watercolor", she studied with artist-author Jeanne Carbonetti. Jeanne was a spiritual mentor that nurtured the development of Robin's professional career.
Samiljan attended the International Encaustic Conference in 2008 and discovered a passion for encaustic painting. Attending graduate school in 2009 to receive a Master of Education degree in Arts and Learning allowed her an opportunity to feature encaustic paintings in her graduate school final exhibition. A move back to Chicago led Robin to exploring another medium, soft pastel painting. The COVID pandemic allowed her the time to hone and combine a variety of her artistic techniques.
She continues to work with multiple art mediums using saturated pigments on papers and boards, often combined with wax or gesso to create luminous, dimensional textures. Samiljan is a signature member of the Chicago Pastel Painters, member of Wisconsin Visual Artist NORTH, and has maintained an Artist Membership at the Copley Society of Art in Boston since 2012. Most recently, her home has transitioned from Chicago to Green Bay where she is actively re-connecting with nature influencing her art.

"Inspiration for 'A Year of the Full Moon' came each month when the moon was full. After viewing the moon I painted the way it made me feel rather than what I actually saw."
