Lunar Eclipse Re-visited

This week was the return of the Blood Moon, a lunar eclipse event that was visible in every U.S. state. Seeing the full moon brought me back to the first time I viewed and painted lunar events. For this version, I decided to use soft pastels combined with micaceous iron oxide to give the underpainting sparkle and texture, unlike the original moon series that was created using only watercolor paints.

Early this morning I took my dog out and I was still able to see the full moon (a day after the eclipse), and as simple as the composition of the night sky may seem, there is always a deeper emotional connection for me.

When I paint from my heart, re-creating a feeling becomes more important than the literal subject matter. Many years ago when the Full Moon series was still developing, I was interviewed by a local reporter who was able to put in words what I was doing with paint. It’s been over two decades and I still always feel a connection to the full moon cycles.

This is also the time of year I start hearing back from the summer art festivals. So far, in May I’ll be exhibiting at the Sturgeon Bay Fine Art Fair and in July at Appleton Art at the Park. In the coming weeks I will be hearing from shows in Madison, WI as well as the Kohler Arts Center. There is never a guarantee of acceptance plus I am still learning about the festival opportunities in Wisconsin. Looking forward to the warmer weather, being outdoors, and meeting both new and returning patrons.
